Tell Norway to stop krill fishing expansion and support Antarctic marine protected areas

3,643 signatures. The goal was 1K.

Antarctica's Southern Ocean is home to krill — tiny crustaceans that feed whales, penguins, and seabirds, and help lock carbon deep in the ocean.

Krill populations are the foundation of the Antarctic ecosystem and the species that depend on them are already under pressure. Just this year, Antarctic fur seals were reclassified as endangered, with krill declines a key reason why.

But despite its importance, krill is being harvested by the hundreds of thousands of tonnes every year —  not to feed the world, but to be ground down into omega-3 supplements, farmed salmon feed, and pet food. And Norway is the dominant actor in this industry, responsible for the majority of global krill catch.

At last year’s annual meeting of the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), where countries decide how to manage and protect Antarctica, Norway tried to double the krill quota — even in the face of a record-breaking krill catch that caused an early closure of the fishery.

Most Norwegians don't know what is happening in their name.

The government is putting the commercial interests of one powerful industry above the health of a global ecosystem — and above Norway's own values of environmental leadership and responsibility. But Norway knows better.

Since 2006, Antarctic krill fishing has increased by over 600%.

Sign the petition to tell the Norwegian government to stop supporting the expansion of Antarctic krill fishing and champion the establishment of new marine protected areas.

Campaign goals

Stop the expansion of krill fishing

Norway does not support the expansion of krill fishing at the next CCAMLR meeting in October.

Protect Antarctic wildlife

Norway votes to protect Antarctic wildlife by supporting MPA creation in Antarctica.

Why your voice matters

Most Norwegians don't know this is happening in their name. Your voice shows policymakers that Norwegians care about Antarctic wildlife.

What happens next

We'll put this petition in front of the Norwegian ministers and delegates who decide Antarctica's fate. But this is just the beginning — as the next annual CCAMLR meeting approaches, we'll be turning up the pressure, and when the moment comes, we'll be reaching out to you.
